Project #3: Observation & Comparison

Project 3: Interactive Floors

Part 3 Observation & Comparison

—————————————————————————————————

Part A

People at bus stops generally keep to themselves and smoke, read, or use their smart phones.  These are the most common activities I have noticed people do.  In Elevators, it’s similar but there is less involvement in the activity.  I’m sure that most people know the awkward feeling of standing in an elevator full of complete strangers.  It seems that everyone tries their hardest to avoid eye contact and not make any strange noises for the duration of the ride.

These ‘awkward’ sensations are what lead us to want to create something to break the ice and, much more importantly, make people feel welcomed and friendly in these isolating spaces.  Riding the bus or elevator is more commonly something you do with a group of people rather than alone, so why does it not incorporate any form of social interaction?

Our intention is for the Social Stop floor to use fun graphics to help people share their favorite media and make new friends.  Whether at the bus stop, elevator, or waiting area or using your portable gaming device, mp3 player, smart phone, or e-reader, our device will enable you to passively create personalized graphics and notify those around you with what you’re doing.

Another potential of our product is to incorporate Twitter, Facebook, or any other social media network access with the interactive floors so that friends and readers could be updated with where you are and what you’re doing.
